Combined (rail and motor) road from Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Service nearly 48.2 km long will be not only the main passenger artery of 2014 Olympic Games, but will also improve regional infrastructure due to connection to M-27 federal road through traffic interchanges. The new Adler – Krasnaya Polyana road is laid mainly on the left bank of Mzymta River. Designers considered all features of natural landscape and traced railway and traffic in parallel to each other. Twelve tunnels with the total length of 30 km and 46 bridges will be built here. This solution allows nearly streamlined connection between Adler and Alpica-Service terminal station.
The planned railway capacity between Adler and Krasnaya Polyana is 6 train-pairs per hour. Train speed at this section will be up to 160 km/h. Trains positions will be monitored using GLONASS satellite navigation system. Enterprises of SK MOST group of companies are working at the road segment between pickets 141 and 462, between the 14th and the 46th kilometers of the road. Six railway tunnels with the total length over 10 km, 3 traffic tunnels (over 7 km) and 3 service tunnels (over 9 km) are under construction at the road connecting Akhshtyr and Esto-Sadok settlements. They are built using both rock tunneling method (with roadheader machines) and shield tunneling method (with using Tunnel Boring Machines).
In addition to tunnels, 10.8 km of railway tracks and 22 railway bridges with the total length of almost 11.4 km will be built here. Furthermore, the Company will build over 11.5 km of traffic and 24 road bridges with the total length over 9.3 km. According to the construction schedule approved by a commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this road shall be constructed within five years. The road shall be commissioned not later than the 3rd quarter of 2013.
